Update on expenses

I've made a little progress on our monthly expenditures:

1. Canceled data plan on my phone. Savings: $20/month
2. Reduced cable bill. Savings : $32/month
3. Deferred student loan payments until June : Savings: $560/month (not really saving, but I don't have to pay it out right now)
4. Groceries:  Reduced this last month by about $25. Not great, but it's something

That's it so far, but it's a little encouraging in the face of a big expense we didn't expect.

  1. Please share how you lowered cable bill? I really need to lower our fixed expenses too. Student loans are a bummer, I'm so sorry you are burdened with them. Maybe you can get everything else paid down before you have to start paying them again...

  2. Sharon: I called the company and asked how much it would be just for internet since my husband and I were trying to lower our bills. I had digital cable, DVR, HBO, and basic internet service. The agent told me it would be $41 for internet only, or $49 for basic cable with internet. Then she started looking through available packages for new customers and came up with what we had, minus HBO, for $98! I was paying $130! I was actually kind of ticked. As I said to her, HBO doesn't cost $32 a month. She said that the package was for new customers but she would offer it to me for 12 months if I agreed to not cancel cable all together. So, I agreed. Basically, they were just trying to save their butts and get me to not cancel cable completely. Amazing what they can come up with faced with losing a customer. (Insert eye roll here.) Anyway, I'll take it.....for now. :)

  4. Thanks Freebird. I am not feeling very awesome; I am a bit discouraged in fact. But we'll stick to our guns. The credit cards are still locked in the safe. :)
